Francisco Morazán Square

The Plaza Morazán, in the Historic Center of San Salvador, stands out for the monument to the Central American hero Francisco Morazán, made of Carrara marble by Durini Hermanos. In front of it is the National Theater, which makes it an important cultural and social point.

Plaza Morazán: historical memory and cultural life

The Plaza Morazán was inaugurated on March 15, 1882 by President Rafael Zaldívar, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Francisco Morazán. From its beginnings it has been a social and cultural meeting place, surrounded by gardens, fountains, statues and with lighting, first kerosene and then electric. During the 20th century, the plaza was accompanied by iconic businesses such as the Bengoa Restaurant, the Lutecia Bar, and historic benches. In the 1960s it incorporated mosaics by Carlos Cañas in its water mirrors, one of which was restored in 2017. Today, it is a modern and orderly space, which serves as a stage for activities in front of the National Theater.
